The Ukrainian city at the heart of brutal Donbas street fighting

After previous failures, Russia is determined to take Severodonetsk, while Ukraine shows no sign of backing down.

While experts see no sign of Russia turning its attention away from Ukraine’s Donbas, the world has taken notice of Severodonetsk – now a focal point in the battle for the region.

Fighting continues from street to street in the city, with neither side willing to lose control despite Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky admitting Russian forces have a numerical advantage.

Any stall in Moscow’s tactics would provide Ukraine with an opportunity to launch a counter offensive, but roughly 70 percent of Severodonetsk is now believed to be in Russian hands.
