Ukrainian Armed Forces have advanced into some of Russia's main defensive lines in the south of Ukraine – putting pressure on Russia to redeploy troops from parts of the frontline to replace degraded units in the region, UK defence intelligence reports.

Intelligence suggests that elements of Ukraine's forces have advanced into the multi-layered main Russian defensive lines east of the town of Robotyne, while Ukraine's dismounted infantry is continuing to make gradual tactical advances against Russian positions in the area, according to the Ministry of Defence (MOD).

Ukrainian forces have also kept up the pressure on Russian positions to the south of Bakkmut, making gradual gains between Klishchiivka and Adriivka, the UK's defence intelligence says.

It is highly likely that Russia is switching troops from parts of the frontline to replace the degraded units around Robotyne, the MOD said.

The latest intelligence report comes after the head of the UK Armed Forces said that Russia was losing the war in Ukraine and emphasised that what happens in the conflict will have a huge impact around the globe.

Speaking in America on global security, Admiral Sir Tony Radakin said "Ukraine continues to have the initiative" in the conflict.

"Ukraine has regained 50% of the land that Russia initially took back in February last year," he said.

He added: "Ukraine is the one that is pushing forward, Ukraine is adapting to the really difficult circumstances that it faces and we need to continue our support in the way that we've done."

The advancement of the Ukrainian Forces through Russia's main defensive lines in southeastern Ukraine comes four months into Ukraine's counteroffensive.

Ukraine has also increased attacks on Russia's mainland territory, with drone strikes in Russia having become increasingly common in recent months.
