A Briton, who according to reports was a Parachute Regiment veteran, has died in Ukraine.

Simon Lingard, who his family described as "a real-life hero who died fighting for what he believed in", is said to have died on Monday.

He was reportedly killed while fighting to defend Bakhmut from Russian attacks.

Stacey Longworth, the mother of Mr Lingard's two children, told the BBC he had been a soldier for most of his life and was a former member of the Parachute Regiment.

The Foreign Office confirmed it is supporting the family of a British national who died in Ukraine.

"We are in touch with the local authorities in connection with his death," a spokesperson said.

Mr Lingard's family said the Ukrainian military has offered to bring him back to England.

They have set up a fundraising page asking for supporting to give him "the greatest well-deserved send-off".

Organised by Stacey, on behalf of their two children, it reads: "As most people are aware my dad, Simon Lingard, (Grimmy) sadly lost his life in Ukraine on Monday, November 7.

"My dad was an inspiration to all who knew him, a real-life hero who died fighting for what he believed in. He was loved and adored by so many, a true representation of what a soldier should be."

They described being "absolutely heartbroken" at their loss.

The message added: "The Ukrainian military have offered to bring him home to England but we need help to show him the respect and adoration he deserves by giving him THE greatest well-deserved send-off.

"Could you all please find it in your heart to donate anything, no matter how small, so we can honour our dad and allow him to finally rest in peace."

The fundraising page has raised more than £23,000 so far, with dozens of people paying tribute in the comments.

One person said: "Since the day I met you in Afghanistan, you've always had my utmost respect. You were an outstanding paratrooper and father and you will be sorely missed."

Another person commented: "I served with your dad in Afghan and what a bloke he was. You have every right to be incredibly proud of him and everything he has done in his life. So sorry for your loss, he's going to be missed by many."

Kierren Stokes wrote on Facebook that he served with Mr Lingard in 2 PARA and said he was an "awesome soldier with a great, sometimes questionable, sense of humour".

Lingard's family have so far raised more than £24,000 on GoFundMe for Lingard's funeral.
