Russia has only managed to advance about 10km in its assault in the Donbas region of Ukraine, the Ministry of Defence has said.

In an update posted on Twitter, the MOD said over the last 30 days, Russia had only managed to advance that short distance following its assault towards the town of Bakhmut – its most successful advance in the Donbas.

The update also said Russia has attempted to break through in other sections of the Donbas, but in the last 30 days, its military has not gained more than 3km – which the MOD said is "significantly less than planned".

Russia has continued to use heavy artillery in the areas, however, its lack of capable infantry has limited substantial advances.

Earlier this month, Ukrainian military personnel were fortifying around the eastern city of Sloviansk, with a Russian assault expected on the strategic point in the Donetsk region.

The last Russian strike on the city took place on 30 July.

It was also recently announced the US would deliver an additional $1bn in military aid to Ukraine – the biggest delivery to Ukrainian forces yet.
