The Navy have won both the men and women’s Bobsleigh Inter Services titles for the first time ever.

Despite having some members of the team only joining three weeks ago, they have powered past the RAF and the Army to take the championship title.

In his final ever event as a competitor, Olympic athlete Sergeant John Jackson won the men’s race by 0.14 of a second to seal the title.

In the women’s race, Corporal Mel Benfield of the RAF took the individual honour but it was the Navy who secured a team victory.

For Sgt Jackson, it is something the Navy have been working towards for a while since he became part of the training staff.

He said: "For the last seven or eight years, we have wanted to have a win for the men and women’s teams together.

"The team have worked hard and that was the result we came to get. It’s just a plus sign that I managed to get the top spot."

Sgt Jackson also praised the newer Navy athletes who have taken them to the top.

"Most of the team were brand new only three weeks ago when we had our first week on ice together," he said.

"That’s what we have been building.

"It’s not about the individuals. It’s about the team who won."

The Navy women’s team captain Lieutenant Commander Alex Kelley was also full of praise for the team who took the women’s title for the first time.

She said: "It’s amazing. We’ve never had three sleds before.

"For us to have a full squad and come away with the team trophy for the first time ever in Navy bobsleigh history is absolutely incredible.

"I’m very proud of the team."
