Triathlon star Kat Matthews wins Army Sportswoman of the Year after horrific accident

Army triathlon star, Captain Katrina Matthews, said it was a "real privilege" to have been nominated alongside her peers at the CSG Army Sports Awards.

The 2021 Ironman World Championships runner-up spoke after winning the Army Sportswoman of the Year category.

Accepting the award, Cpt Matthews said she's not trying to focus on "what could have been" after she was forced to miss the 2022 Ironman World Championships in Kailua-Kona after she was hit by a car during her training.

She said: "I am not trying to focus on what could have been, although I really feel like perhaps I could have won.

"I came very close in May to taking that top step and as you saw, the Sub8 project was pretty immense."

Cpt Matthews became the first woman to finish an Ironman triathlon event in under eight hours a the Pho3nix Foundation Sub7-Sub8 event in Germany earlier this year, winning the race in 7:31:54.

She said: "I didn't realise how important it would be to me as an athlete, but actually it was the amalgamation of doing my sport triathlon, which is an individual sport, but bringing it together as part of a team, it made triathlon a real thing, not just a selfish pursuit of excellence."
