UKAF men kick off 2023 with win against University of South Wales
The UK Armed Forces football team have kicked off their 2023 campaign with a decisive 5-1 win against the students from the University of South Wales.
The UKAF side put on a dominant display in the first half, and 15 minutes into the game the first goal came from Sean Thomson to get their campaign under way.
An assist from Scott McCarthy gave Jake Gosling the chance to give UKAF a 2-0 lead, as the student defence struggled to stop the military side from storming through.
McCarthy was soon able to get a goal of his own, a great feed in from Sean Powell enabled him to get within striking distance, and a bit of luck on the line gave UKAF a 3-0 lead.
As half-time approached, Thomson showed that he was not done, and he struck his second goal of the match to give UKAF a commanding 4-0 lead.
In the second half, UKAF took their time and went through the motions which frustrated the student opposition.
That frustration showed as UKAF's Greg Peel was brought down at the box, and it was up to Gosling to take the penalty.
Calm and measured, Gosling successfully converted to stretch UKAF's already huge lead to 5-0.
The students from the University of South Wales finally had luck go their way after a tackle from Brodie Gray resulted in a yellow card and a penalty.
Haben Samson successfully converted but it was just a consolation as UKAF ran out 5-1 winners as the military side started 2023 on a high note.
UKAF Football have a busy 12 months ahead as they prepare to face the Irish Defence Force, the German Bundeswehr and set their eyes on winning back the Kentish Cup.
