Inter Services T20 cricket: RAF beat Navy and outline Lord's title ambitions

A stellar batting performance was enough to beat the Senior Service in Aldershot.

The Royal Air Force men's cricket team have won the opening match of the 2022 T20 Inter Services championships.

They beat the Royal Navy in Aldershot ahead of a title-deciding clash with the Army at Lord's on Thursday which will be broadcast live on the Forces News YouTube channel.

A strong first innings saw the RAF batsmen set a target of 168 runs and the Navy got close but fell short by just three runs.

The top scorer for the RAF was Sam Beales (44) with their captain Tom Shorthouse (36) and Adam Sutcliffe (24) also providing to the score.

The Navy did grab eight wickets during the first innings and Alvin Pollard's four-wicket haul was a bright start to his campaign.

The batsmen from the Senior Service knew a target of 168 runs would be difficult but went about their task with determination.

The partnership between Jack Watson (51) and skipper Ben Johnston (56) saw both men reach half-centuries while Will Rogers and Jack Bell both added 14 runs each.

However, it wouldn't be enough as they reached their 20-overs three runs away from a good result.

The Navy will now play the British Army in the opening match at Lord's on Thursday before the men in red try to stop the RAF from sealing the title later in the afternoon.

Both matches, as well as the first ever UKAF Women's match at Lord's, will be shown live on the Forces News YouTube channel.
