The Commando Logistic Regiment (CLR) Royal Marines have won their second Navy football title in three years.
They defeated Royal Naval Air Service Culdrose in the final at HMS Drake in Plymouth.
A goal in the last minute of extra-time by McCauley Plant sealed a 2-1 win for the Marines.
Both teams had good chances to take an early lead. TJ Walter sent Jamie Thirkle’s cross just wide for Seahawk while for the Marines, Elliott Sachell’s shot was well-saved by Jamie Stewart.
CLR did open the scoring though in the 30th minute. Richard Charles thundered a header towards goal which was well-saved by Stewart, but Taylor Lawrence Van Pooss knocked in the rebound for 1-0.
Culdrose nearly equalised immediately. Jack Stocker fired just wide from a good Walter cross.
Just after the half-time break, the score was levelled.
Thirkle’s cross was touched on by Stocker into the path of Walter. His shot was heading in, but Charles made sure the ball crossed the line with a last-ditch touch.
The Marines came the closest to victory in normal time. Satchell’s cross picked out Charles who powered his header towards the goal but the ball thumped off the crossbar.
Extra time seemed to fly by and with penalties looming, CLR grabbed their winning goal.
Josh Jones provided the cross, but Plant’s finish was out of the stretch of Stewart sparking wild Marines celebrations.
