Army corporal aiming for Commonwealth Games boxing gold medal

Army boxer Corporal Megan Reid is 'going for gold' at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

The Royal Logistic Corps soldier is representing Scotland at the event in Birmingham and is hoping to win the big prize.

She's previously competed at World Championships and European Championships but is preparing for her Commonwealth Games debut.

"My aim at the games is for a gold medal – obviously – that's what everyone aims for," she explained.

"I wouldn't be going otherwise. I'd be absolutely buzzing.

"Even thinking about it now, it would be the highlight of my career. It would be the peak in my career so, yeah, fingers crossed."

Cpl Reid is expecting tough competition for the win though saying: "Sixty kilograms is quite competitive in the female division.

"So we have the Irish girl Amy Broadhurst. She's the current world champion.

"She will be my biggest threat so, hopefully, I'll meet her further down the line."

Cpl Reid's coach, Niall Clark, added: "It is a very competitive education. Imagine the top level of international boxing, which this will be, there's lots of good competitors but Megan's one of them so she should do very well.

"She's an experienced athlete now – boxed all around the world.

"She's been a part of our programme for quite a few years now with great working relationship with the British Army which is a great bonus."
