The Army Sports Awards are the climax of an exciting sporting year for many athletes.

The 2022 CGS Army Sports Awards have taken place at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst with boxing winning the main male and rising star awards.

National champion Lance Corporal Carnell Brown won Sportsman of the Year beating the nominees from Wakeboarding (Warrant Officer Class 2 Dale Crossley) and Judo (Warrant Officer Class 2 Ethaniel Jeffries-Mor).

Sportswoman of the Year had a strong field.

Corporal Megan Reid appeared at the Commonwealth Games in the boxing competition, Bombardier Bethan Dainton starred for the Army women's rugby union at Twickenham Stadium and Corporal Sarah Hawkes just missed out on a Commonwealth Games bronze medal in Birmingham.

However, it was triathlon superstar Captain Kat Matthews who walked away with the main female prize. She missed out on the rising star award last year so this award is evidence of her rise in 2022.

This year's award for brightest prospect went to Lance Corporal Terri Stuart although two of Army rugby's new headline-makers in Sapper Jack Johnson and Private Courtney Pursglove made a strong case after starring roles at Twickenham.

Private Jasmine Holmes from the Army triathlon team was also nominated for the award.

The Team of the Year has already been announced as the women's hockey team - chosen ahead of women's triathlon and men's water polo. All of them were highly successful in 2022.

There was an award to highlight the top officials in the Army and while outgoing women's rugby league coach Warrant Officer Class 2 Woz Broadley and weightlifting's Sergeant Stu King were nominated, it was netball umpire Sergeant Channon Heaney who won.

There were also minor, major and reserve unit awards with

A third award went Army boxing's way as Mick Gannon was rewarding for 50 years of service to the sport with the Lifetime Achievement award.

  • Sportswoman of the Year: Captain Kat Matthews (Triathlon)
  • Team of the Year: Women's hockey team
  • Rising Star: Lance Corporal Terri Stuart (Boxing)
