The Defence Secretary and Chief of Defence Staff have said claims there could be “mutiny” by senior officers under Labour are ‘completely unacceptable’ if they are true.

An un-named serving general has reportedly warned there could be mass resignations if Jeremy Corbyn were to become prime minister and tried to ‘downgrade’ the army.

In the statement, Michael Fallon said:

"The Chief of the Defence Staff and I agree that these comments, if true, are completely unacceptable. We are absololutely clear that senior members of the military must of course always remain politically neutral."

Labour’s deputy leader has dismissed the story as froth, but it has renewed questions about whether Mr Corbyn faces mutiny in his own ranks - with looming decisions on extending RAF air-strikes to Syria, and renewing Britain's nuclear weapons.

James Hirst's report contains flashing images.
