The Earl of Wessex has marked the formation of a new Reserve Guards Battalion in London.

Prince Edward met Reserve Officers from 1st Battalion London Guards and the wider British Army at a reception at London's Cavalry and Guards Club last week, the Army said.

Edward is the Royal Colonel of 1st Battalion London Guards.

The new battalion was formed, as a product of the military reforms, on 1 May last year.

It is the first time the four senior regiments of the Foot Guards have their own Reserve companies.

Since the formation of the new Battalion, its Guardsmen have deployed to support exercises by the Grenadier Guards, Coldstream Guards and Irish Guards, the Army said.

Personnel have also deployed operationally to the Falkland Islands.

In September 2022, members of the Battalion took part in ceremonial duties during the funeral of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

This month, Guardsmen of 1st Battalion London Guards are being mobilised to support Operation Interflex - helping to train Ukrainian personnel.

Later in the year, the reservists are set to support The Colonel’s Review and The King’s Birthday Parade.
