Military Working Dogs Prepare For The Sounds Of Combat

It’s well known combat can leave soldiers traumatised but the same thing can happen to military dogs.
Now, for the first time, to get them used to battle, the animals are taking part in live firing exercises.
The exercise is part of a programme designed to gradually desensitise dogs to the sounds of combat.
The aim is to make sure that when bullets fly it’s less of a shock to the animal.
Vehicle Search Dog Handler Private Fiona Flannigan has been to Afghanistan once but her vehicle search dog Alvin has been there twice. She said:
“You’ve just got to make sure he’s safe, doesn’t get in front of you and he’s not too scared or anything. Try and comfort him at the same time."
