Watch: Footage taken from US helicopter as suspected Russian intelligence ship sails near Hawaii

Footage taken from a US Coast Guard helicopter shows what the US believes to be a Russian intelligence ship operating off the coast of Hawaii.

The video shows the ship that has been monitored in recent weeks through an extremely zoomed-in lens, with activity and equipment visible on the deck of the ship.

In a press briefing, Deputy Pentagon Press Secretary Sabrina Singh said that while she couldn't confirm why the Russians are "sailing this ship right now", she did say it was "precarious timing" with the war in Ukraine continuing.

"But I would say that the Coast Guard is still... monitoring this Russian vessel that we believe is an intelligence-gathering vessel but is operating in international and open waters," she said.

"We haven't seen any unsafe or unprofessional behavior, and we expect that the Russians will operate within the region in accordance with international law."
