What happens to the Queen's military titles?

The Queen held hundreds of honorary military roles across all three services, acting as a patron to the men and women who served in those units.

Other working Royals also hold many such honorary titles – now it is a matter for King Charles III to redistribute them.

The expectation is that the King will take on many of his late mother's honorary military roles, and pass on many that he has held to the new Prince of Wales, Prince William.

But nothing is guaranteed for any particular role, particularly because King Charles has previously indicated his intention to further reduce the size of the working Royal Family over time.

The Queen Consort, who is patron of Forces News' parent company BFBS, already holds a number of honorary military titles and may well be chosen to take on more.

"It will take a little bit of time because there's so much else on the agenda, and on the plate of the new King," the former Chief of the General Staff, Lord Dannatt, told the BFBS Sitrep podcast.

"There will be parts of the Armed Forces for whom The Queen was Colonel-in-Chief, or Honorary Commodore, or Honorary Air Commodore, which will have no honorary Royal person for a while.

"We all need to be patient and these appointments will be filled, and then we can put our loyalty and support behind whoever is now filling those new appointments," he added.

The same process will be followed for patronages of the many military charities supported by the Royal Family.
