The Duchess of Edinburgh has been handed two new honorary military roles by King Charles.

Sophie has taken on the post of Royal Colonel of the Queen's Own Yeomanry, previously held by the King, as well as becoming the new Colonel-in-Chief of The Royal Irish Regiment.

Her Royal Highness' role as Colonel-in-Chief of The Royal Irish Regiment was a position previously held by Prince Andrew.

The Royal Irish Regiment is the only Irish Infantry Regiment in the British Army - with the 1st Battalion based in Ternhill, Shropshire, and the 2nd Battalion are based in Lisburn, Northern Ireland.

The Duchess was also appointed as Royal Colonel of The Queen's Own Yeomanry, a light cavalry reserve regiment in the British Army. It is a light reconnaissance unit and is based in Fox Barracks, Chester.

It comes as Prince William and Princess Kate took on three honorary military roles, including Prince William being appointed as Colonel-in-Chief of The Army Air Corps – which will see him take command of brother Prince Harry's old unit.

Princess Kate also took over Princess William as Royal Honorary Air Commodore of RAF Coningsby – one of the homes of the UK's Quick Reaction Alert Typhoons.
