102 Battalion REME have been tackling a festive themed design task on their final exercise of the year.

The Northern Craftsmen have been delivering Christmas presents on vehicles they have built from scratch.

The seasonal chariot race saw the reservists negotiate a downhill course carrying a cargo of four parcels across the finish line.

Although the activity is a bit of fun, Commanding Officer, Lt Col Nick Moore stresses the practical & relevant applications.

"It's about understanding engineering specifications. They've interpreted the design challenge using their skills and have then manufactured items by Company to meet those specifications."

He added: "You don't have to do true green training to develop your Corps capabilities."

Soldiers from 124 Recovery Company up-cycled materials for their design, combining a bike found in a skip with an old child carrier.

Driver Corporal Richard Garfield concedes his attempt at the course could have gone better.

"A slight oversight when it came to steering. I forgot what it was."

End of year fun for these north-east reservists

In the end, 146 Field Company were declared the winners.
