Ukraine preparing F-16 fighter jet infrastructure after 'powerful offer', Zelensky says
President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed during a press conference that Ukraine has completed final negotiations for F-16 jets from its European partners and is now awaiting US approval.
According to Mr Zelensky's official website, the Ukrainian president "had a very important meeting with the leaders of the countries who confirmed their readiness to provide Ukraine with F-16 aircraft".
After reaching final agreements on the transfer of the combat aircraft, Ukraine "will begin preparing the appropriate infrastructure for them", but the statement goes on to say: "this process will take some time".
"Our partners know how many aircraft we need. I have already received an understanding of the number from some of our European partners, and it is powerful" Mr Zelensky said.
"I am very happy with the information I received from some countries. I just had a day of happiness. It was a serious, powerful offer."
The Ukrainian president is said to be hoping to finalise "a joint agreement with the United States" as soon as the next Ukraine Defence Contact Group meeting.
Last month, delegates from 50 countries allied to Ukraine met at America's Ramstein Air Base in Germany.
The defence group meets monthly and was formed a year ago to help Ukraine defend itself against the illegal Russian invasion.
