Since 1965 Haig School in has proudly served MoD Schools in Gütersloh, Germany. Now, as the drawdown enters it's next phase, the beloved school will be closing its doors for good and saying goodbye to the BFG community.

Sad to leave, staff and pupils of the school, situated on Mansergh Barracks, Gütersloh, decided to memorialize the facility by donating a tree to Stadtpark on 19 June 2019. The tree will remain as a legacy for future generations. It was during the ceremonial occasion that Headmaster, Ben Turner, remarked on the symbolic gesture of the learning that had taken place within Haig School over 54 years and the 'special and unique' relationship the school has with the town.

The park was selected as it is in the vicinity of both Mansergh Barracks and the Englische Siedlung MQ Patch, and is considered a likely location to which current and former pupils and staff may return to visit in years to come.

Alongside the tree sits a special plaque, produced by 3 Civilian Workshops, Bielefeld, that records Haig School’s donation; ‘Donated by Haig School following closure. Thank you, Gütersloh. 1965 – 2019’

Ben Turner closed the ceremony with a final thought, ‘It is an honour and a privilege to be able to leave something behind to a town that has given us so many memories and so much friendship – Danke!’
