The CIA planned to give the Falklands to Argentina if the country won the war against Britain over the islands, declassified CIA documents have revealed.
They show that US intelligence chiefs believed Britain had 'underestimated' the Argentinian military, following the 1982 invasion.
Brits living on the island were to be paid to leave and relocated to Scotland 'or elsewhere where conditions may be similar to the Falklands'. Anyone who opted to stay would become an Argentinian citizen, meanwhile.
Written by the chairman of the National Intelligence Council, Henry Rowen, the top-secret memo was titled 'Solution to the Falklands Crisis'. He said:
'For a period of three years the inhabitants of the Falkland Islands will be given a chance to consider whether they wish to remain on the Falkland Islands or whether they wish to relocate to an area of British jurisdiction, either in the UK or elsewhere under British sovereignty, with a relocation grant of $100,000 per person.'
The briefing is part of 13 million declassified documents that have been made available online by the CIA, which also include records of UFO sightings and details of the Stargate programme investigating psychic powers.
