Award-winning director Sam Mendes has been spotted in Glasgow directing his new First World War film.

The Skyfall filmmaker, who won a Tony Award at the weekend, was seen at Govan Graving Docks during another day of filming for the World War One epic, '1917'.

It is understood the film will follow two British soldiers over the course of one day at the height of the Great War.

On set alongside Mr Mendes was Kinsgman actor Mark Strong and Captain Fantastic star George MacKay.

Other well-known stars will also include Richard Madden, Benedict Cumberbatch and Colin Firth.

Mr Mendes was seen watching footage on a monitor and in conversation with Oscar-winning cinematographer Roger Deakins.

The film is also believed to include former service personnel, who are helping behind the scenes.

Steven Spielberg’s production company, Amblin Partners, was confirmed last June to be financing the film.

It is expected to be released in UK cinemas in 2020.
