US sends Avengers to bolster Ukraine's air defences
Four US-made Avenger air defence systems are being sent to Ukraine to help prevent Moscow from attacking key infrastructure from the sky.
The short-range systems, which can be mounted on a Humvee vehicle, consist of two four-round Stinger surface-to-air missiles and an M3P .50 calibre machine gun, along with a forward-looking infrared and laser range finder.
Capable of shooting down targets up to five miles away, they provide mobile, short-range air defence protection for ground units against a variety of threats, including cruise missiles and kamikaze drones.
