The tweet was posted ahead of New Year's Eve celebrations in the United States (Picture: US Department of Defense).

The US Department of Defense command in charge of America's nuclear weapons has apologised for tweeting in "poor taste".

US Strategic Command stated it was "ready to drop something much, much bigger" than the New Year's Eve ball in New York with a video of bombs being released.

A since-deleted post by its official Twitter account said: "#TimesSquare tradition rings in the #NewYear by dropping the big ball...if ever needed, we are #ready to drop something much, much bigger."

The accompanying video clip showed a B-2 bomber dropping bombs and explosions.

The account has since tweeted an apology, saying: "Our previous NYE tweet was in poor taste & does not reflect our values. We apologize. We are dedicated to the security of America & allies."
