Ukraine says 400 Russian troops killed by missile strike

Ukraine says 400 Russian troops have been killed by a missile attack in the Russian-controlled part of the eastern Donetsk region.
But Russian officials say 63 of its soldiers were killed – neither figure has been confirmed.
The Strategic Communications Directorate of Ukraine's Armed Forces claims that the Kremlin troops were killed in a vocational school building in Makiivka and about 300 were wounded.
However, the Russian Defence Ministry said it had destroyed seven Himars rockets fired by Ukrainian forces, including near Makiivka but did not mention an attack on a vocational school.
Daniil Bezsonov, a senior Russian-backed regional official in the Donetsk region said the attack took place just after midnight on New Year's Day.
Bezsonov posted on the Telegram messaging app that "there were dead and wounded, the exact number is still unknown. The building itself was badly damaged."
The latest attack follows two consecutive nights of missiles launched by Russian forces on cities across Ukraine on both New Year's Eve and New Year's Day.
Elsewhere, the mayor of Kyiv has accused Russia of sending 40 "exploding drones" to the capital overnight.
Mayor Vitali Klitschko said 22 were destroyed over Kyiv, plus a further three in the outlying region and 15 over neighbouring provinces.
He added that energy infrastructure facilities in Kyiv were damaged, and an explosion occurred in one city district.
This resulted in one person being taken to hospital and power outages.
