A sixth round of peace talks between American and Taliban officials will be held on Wednesday in Qatar, an official for the Taliban said.

The aim of the talks is to put an end to the 17-year war in Afghanistan.

Speaking to Reuters, a spokesman for the Taliban forces said talks are due to begin any minute as the US delegation has already arrived at the location designated for the meeting.

The two sides have met repeatedly over the past few months to discuss the possibility of a peace deal.

The framework for the eventual peace deal would see the Taliban vow to stop Afghanistan being used as terrorist safe heaven and foreign forces being pulled out of the territory.

Until now, the Afghan government has not been included in talks.
