Royal Navy Sailors Surprise WWII Veteran On Her 100th Birthday

It was a welcome surprise for Joyce Bedford after her daughter recently died from COVID-19.

Royal Navy personnel have surprised a World War Two veteran on her 100th birthday.

Joyce Bedford celebrated her centenary year on VE Day last week, and sailors from Devonport Naval Base sang 'happy birthday' to her, outside her home in Plymouth.

She said it was "marvellous" and "an absolutely wonderful" surprise.

Ms Bedford joined the Auxiliary Territorial Service in 1938 and carried out a range of vital roles during the Second World War.

The surprise was a welcomed boost for Ms Bedford after her daughter died just a few weeks ago from coronavirus.

VE Day 75 commemorations across the country were cancelled last week as a result of the pandemic.

Warrant Officer Alex Orr, from Naval Regional Command, said: “It’s the 75th anniversary and there's supposed to have been a lot more organisation, a lot more events on, and if we can do something like this for this lady’s hundredth birthday, let us do it.”

The Queen's Deputy Lieutenant of Devon also attended Ms Bedford's birthday surprise.
