These days RAF Akrotiri is the UK military’s busiest operational airbase.

However, 1,500 years ago the peninsular it stands on led a very different life, as a busy Roman harbour.
 
This month a team of archaeologists from the University of Leicester are in Cyprus trying to uncover what remains of the site.
 
Simon Newton has been to meet them.
 
 
84 Squadron and its Griffin helicopters are based at RAF Akrotiri.
 
These provide Commander British Forces with Search and Rescue support, for which they regularly train with the Republic of Cyprus Police and National Guard Air Command.
 
The helicopters are also used for communications, trooping and fire-fighting duties.
