The US Department of Defense has released powerful images of the American military evacuation mission from Kabul airport, Afghanistan, showing service personnel carrying infants.

Joe Biden said the US-led evacuation of Americans, at-risk Afghans and others from the airport accelerated this weekend.

The US president said 11,000 had departed from Kabul in a 36-hour period this weekend.

About 1,000 British troops, plus Royal Air Force aircraft, have been deployed to the Afghan capital to evacuate UK nationals and eligible Afghans.

On Sunday, the UK's Ministry of Defence confirmed seven Afghan civilians were killed in chaotic scenes outside Kabul airport.
