Navy service member found dead at Faslane nuclear base: police investigation launched

Police are investigating after the death of a member of the Royal Navy at Faslane nuclear submarine base in Scotland.

Emergency services were called to Faslane on Thursday after the body was discovered on the base.

A post-mortem examination is being carried out to establish the cause of death – which officers are currently treating as unexplained.

A report has been sent to the Procurator Fiscal.

A police spokesperson said: "Around 12.30pm on Thursday, 9 December, officers were called to Faslane naval base following the death of a man.

"A post-mortem examination will be carried out to establish the exact cause of death, which is being treated as unexplained.

"A report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal."

A Royal Navy spokesman said: "It is with sadness that we can confirm a member of the Royal Navy has died.

"Our thoughts and sympathies are with the family and friends at this difficult time and we request their privacy is respected.

"At this stage, it would be inappropriate to comment further."
