Kabul evacuation personnel receive medals

Operation Pitting in Afghanistan was one of the biggest evacuations of civilians since the Second World War.

Some of the personnel involved in Operation Pitting, last summer’s evacuation mission following the fall of Kabul, have received medals at Permanent Joint Headquarters - the command centre for the mission in North London.

Defence Secretary Ben Wallace presented the symbols of recognition following the largest humanitarian aid operation in over 70 years, after the Taliban overthrew Afghanistan’s capital. Over 15,000 Afghans and British nationals were flown out.

The medal itself is the existing Operational Service Medal for Afghanistan with an Operation Pitting clasp, a notion of gratitude for the two weeks of intense service.
