Each year thousands of young men in Nepal apply to join the Brigade of Gurkhas.

In August and September they go through regional selection, including vigorous physical fitness tests and literacy exams, and by the end of the year the final few hundred are called in to camp in Pokhara.

There are only a limited number of places available and it’s down to the recruiting teams to make sure they select the best.

Our reporter Carla Prater travelled to Nepal to see some of the tests and trials candidates have to face in central selection.

In part two, meanwhile, Carla looks at the support available to veterans and meet those that rely on the help of the Gurkha Welfare Trust.

It spends more than £4,000,000 every year helping thousands of veterans in Nepal who don’t qualify for a service pension, and offers financial support through its own welfare pension scheme.

It's also set up the country’s first and only residential home for the most frail and needy.
