A Chelsea Pensioner says he will spend some of his Britain's Got Talent prize money on the Royal Hospital Chelsea.

Veteran Colin Thackery came first in the ITV variety show on Sunday night, winning the grand prize of £250,000.

The 89-year-old told 'This Morning' he would be giving his winnings to his hospital and to his family: "

“We’ve got a new centre that we’re wanting to build, a visitor centre, an activity centre – I’d love to think that I set the whole thing off.

“And of course I’ve got family and grandchildren who want to get on the property ladder."

Mr Thackery sang his way through the competition, performing songs like 'We'll Meet Again', 'Wind Beneath My Wings' and 'Love Changes Everything'.

During his semi-final and final performances, he was also joined on stage by a chorus of his friends from the Royal Hospital Chelsea.

He will now perform at this year's Royal Variety Performance.

After his final performance and speaking to the talent competition's presenters Ant and Dec, Colin said he would "die happy" if he got to perform for the Queen:

"I served my Queen for 25 years and to think I could sing for her would be the end."

Along the way Colin has dedicated his performances to his late wife and has been a favourite amongst the programmes judges; Simon Cowell, Amanda Holden, Alesha Dixon and David Walliams.

After watching his final performance Amanda noted he did not want to win for the fame and glamour, saying:

"I know that this is because you served your country and I hope tonight that they serve you."

It is not the British Military's first success story when it comes to Britain's Got Talent.

In 2016 Richard Jones, a British soldier who served as part of the Household Cavalry won the 10th series of the talent show performing military themed magic tricks.
