There is a call for the British Army to provide training to prison governors.

Army veteran Rory Stewart is the Minister for Prisons in the Ministry of Justice, and has suggested that senior members of the service could help create a military-style academy to improve the management skills of governors.

Mr Stewart was for a short time part of the Black Watch in the early 1990s, serving as an infantry officer on a Short Service Limited Commission before studying at university.

He wrote to the Ministry of Defence earlier in the year requesting staff to give more information into how the military college system works.
