Beached: Seaside Sortie For Hercules Aircraft

The tactical transport aircraft landed and took off along a beach in Devon.

For those visiting Saunton Sands, Devon, seeing an RAF C-130J Hercules is something they may not have expected.

The tactical transport aircraft landed and took off along the beach, after heading south-west from its airbase, RAF Brize Norton in Oxfordshire.

Despite its size, the Hercules is designed to take off and land from natural surfaces.

RAF Brize Norton told Forces News that the aircraft was "conducting a routine training sortie".

One onlooker who witnessed the aircraft landing on the beach, Rachel Hoult, said: "It was an exhilarating experience for such a huge plane to land so close to me on my local beach.

"I felt like my timing was very fortunate."
