Armed Forces Personnel Recognised in Queen’s Birthday Honours
Army, Navy and RAF personnel have been recognised for their work in the delayed Queen’s Birthday Honours.
Military personnel have been recognised for their work in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list.
Representatives from the Royal Navy, Army and Royal Air Force have been named on the list, which was postponed from June until October due to the coronavirus pandemic.
ROYAL NAVY AWARDS
Men and women from the Royal Navy and Royal Marines are among the recipients.
They include a surgeon working on the frontline during the pandemic, the officer in charge of training sailors for ceremonial duties and the Head of the Submarine Service.
Surgeon Commander Sam Hutchings was among those to be recognised for his work, and is appointed an OBE.
The intensive care consultant worked at London’s Kings College Hospital during the pandemic, ensuring that the other hospitals around the UK had enough critical care beds.
The 47-year-old said: “We ended up at one time having nine intensive care units in the hospital, so the command-and-control structure ensured everyone and everything was in the right area.
“It is not something we normally do so we have written it up and will get it published. Our model was useful for larger intensive care units.”
He described the year as “pretty frenetic, alternating between flat-out working in March, April, May and June, some recovery over the summer and now a lot of uncertainty as we head into the winter.”
Having been in service for the Royal Navy in submarines, Iraq, Afghanistan and Sierra Leone amid the Ebola crisis, the medic was humble about his honour: “I was surprised and a bit embarrassed because I didn’t do anything that hundreds of people didn’t do.
"It is a team effort and every single person deserves praise.”

Meanwhile, Leading Writer Rebecca Fyans, was made an MBE for her commitment to disability and inclusion and diversity issues, across defence and in her local community.
Working at the Royal Navy headquarters in Portsmouth, she is known for her charity work, a carers’ advocate for the Armed Forces CanDID network.
She said: “I was really shocked to hear about the honour. It is quite amazing. I didn’t think something like this would happen to me.”
Leading Writer Fyans, whose son Sebby was born in 2013 with Down syndrome, last year helped to launch CanDID with an event attended by senior Armed Forces personnel and ministers.
She added: “I was one of the speakers and brought the entire room to tears with my story.
"It has given people, especially senior decision-makers, an insight into what it is like to be a carer in the Armed Forces, really shone a light on it.
“It is a voluntary role and without the support of my family I wouldn’t have been able to do it.”
Leading Writer Fyans was named a rising star in defence in 2018 and, earlier this year, was named one of the most inspirational people in Portsmouth by BAE Systems.

ROYAL AIR FORCE AWARDS
Sergeant Victoria Penton, an Infection Prevention Specialist nurse with the RAF, has been awarded an MBE for her work at the Royal Centre for Defence Medicine (RCDM) Birmingham during the pandemic.
She told Forces News: “I’m delighted and I feel really honoured but I also feel quite humbled. I just think it’s really nice to be part of the nursing cadre and I kind of feel like the nurses have been recognised.
“Obviously I’ve been awarded it, but I feel like I’m going to carry it on behalf of the cadre because I just feel really proud that, through this year and obviously the year it’s been, you know the way it’s been, and I think we’ve recognised what nurses do in the military and in the NHS.
“I think in a way I feel proud, proud to be a nurse actually and proud that I’ve received it.”
