The Armed Forces Covenant will become an independent trust from the 1st April.
Minister for Defence People and Veterans Tobias Ellwood said:
“Establishing this independent trust is a real sign of success. The Armed Forces Covenant Fund has built an excellent reputation making grants to local authorities, empowering them to deliver a wide-ranging list of impressive achievements.
“But the Covenant commitment has to keep evolving to ensure we continue providing the best for our people.”
The announcement was made at the annual Covenant in the Community Conference.
The conference discusses the best practice for supporting the Armed Forces community.
The covenant provides grants from the £10-million per annum provision from the Ministry of Defence and funds projects which include; supporting service families in stress and helping local government to strengthen their delivery of the covenant.
In March 2017 local authorities were provided with almost £3.5 million to help veterans and military personnel with issues relating to healthcare, education, accommodation, and finance.
