Sailors on board Royal Navy ships have been treated to spectacular views of the Northern Lights while deployed on a NATO exercise.

Aircraft carrier HMS Prince of Wales and Type 23 frigate HMS Richmond are currently taking part in Exercise Cold Response – the alliance's biggest Arctic exercise for 30 years.

After leaving the exercise to work with the Joint Expeditionary Force (JEF), HMS Richmond returned and was greeted with stunning views of aurora borealis, posting pictures on its Twitter account.

HMS Prince of Wales, NATO's command ship, also shared images of the natural wonder on its official social media.
