Who would have thought that the simple term 'jumper' could leave our US allies stumped – but that's exactly what happened when a British Army Colonel quizzed American baseball players on some well-known colloquial phrases and slang from the UK.

Colonel Paul Bates, a British Army officer serving in the United States, where he is working with the Nato military alliance in Norfolk, Virginia, raised a few laughs when he questioned the Washington Nationals team on some everyday British lingo – leaving a few of them baffled.

He paid the team a visit in Washington DC to prove the theory that the UK and US are two countries "separated by the same language" ahead of the UK-US Friendship Day, posting the quiz session on social media.

Some of the professional baseball players struggled to work out the meaning of some of the simplest British phrases.

Slang phrases included: "Fancy a cuppa?", "Putting on a jumper" and "Having a good craic".

Some of the players absolutely smashed it out of the park with their answers – while others failed miserably.

The Washington Nationals are playing a game against the Arizona Diamondbacks to mark UK-US Friendship.

According to the Washington Nationals website, the match is "to celebrate the recent coronation of King Charles III and the enduring partnership between the United States and United Kingdom," and that the "Washington Nationals baseball team is pleased to partner with the British Embassy and the British Defence Staff in the US for our second annual UK-US Friendship Day at Nationals Park!"

The game against the Arizona Diamondbacks takes place on Wednesday, 7 June.
