Ey up, cock! It’s Lancashire Day

November 27 is the day to celebrate and indulge in all things Lancastrian.

Lancashire Day is commemorated on this day because 27 November 1925 saw the first elected representative from Lancashire called to Parliament.

The day has since been marked as an annual celebration of all things Lancastrian, except if you’re from Yorkshire obviously.

The day is honoured by various traditions like raising a tipple to the Queen at 9pm GMT or eating Wigan Kebabs.

Before we go into the military history, did you know:

  • Lancashire is the number one county for UK aerospace with 500 supply chain companies. An industry which employs 13,000 people in Lancashire alone.
  • You can travel from London to Preston in two hours via train.
  • Cheese. Lancashire Cheese. Enough said.
  • This county’s 4 successful universities are producing the largest source of STEM graduates.

Lancashire is the traditional home of the old county infantry regiments in Fulwood Barracks, Preston. The 169-year-old garrison is due to close by 2022.

The county is home to the Lancashire Infantry Museum – the largest regimental archive and centre for military historical research in the north of England.

The museum celebrates the historic infantry regiments of central Lancashire which form part of The Duke Of Lancaster’s Regiment, which was created in 2006 by the amalgamation of The Kings Own Royal Border, Kings and Queen’s Lancashire

The regiment is made up of 120 separate units, including the 59 battalions formed by our antecedent Lancashire regiments during the First World War, and all associated militia, rifle volunteers, reservists, home guard and cadet units.

The MoD is also planning investments to Weeton Barracks, near Kirkham, to better support future capability.

If all that isn’t enough to convince you to visit this county, remember they’ve got Blackpool. And Gragareth, the highest point in Lancashire. You can get phenomenal views of Yorkshire from there.
