A serving Royal Marine is officially the world record holder for the fastest half marathon time – while carrying a fridge on his back.

Corporal Sam Hammond, 30, who has served in the Royal Marines for nine years, has been recognised by the Guinness Book of Records for the fastest time completing a half marathon while carrying a household appliance.

With a 26kg fridge strapped to his back, Cpl Hammond completed the Brighton half marathon on 26 February.

He said: "I did the half marathon in Brighton on 26 February in two hours, four minutes, and 13 seconds. Just 40 minutes ahead of the record in the end.

"I was aiming to do it as quickly as possible, but I didn’t think I was coming in that quick. Even though my pacing wasn't planned, I just got carried away on the day.

"I set off with a plan to do 10-minute miles, but every time I looked at my watch it showed I had hit nine-minute miles. I felt comfortable so I stuck with it."

The fridge which the serving Royal Marine carries is nicknamed 'Fridget Jones' and weighs 26kg – and according to Guinness World Records, the fridge has to weigh at least 25kg for the record attempt to count.

Cpl Hammond will be running the London marathon on Sunday and is raising money for SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity.

He has raised £2,726 for SSAFA through his runs and has raised £6,000 for the charity overall.

He added: "I am super excited and super nervous about the London marathon. Like everyone who is doing their first marathon, I am thinking if my training was adequate; never mind the fridge.

"My primary plan is to finish, and the secondary plan is to beat the record of five hours and 49 minutes."
