Armed Forces Day 2022

Merlin lands on Plymouth Hoe ahead of Armed Forces Day celebrations

A Merlin Mk 2 helicopter from RNAS Culdrose landed on Plymouth Hoe as part of Armed Forces Day celebrations in the city.

Plymouth is home to Devonport, the largest naval base in western Europe, and Stonehouse Barracks, home to the headquarters of 3 Commando Brigade Royal Marines.

More military craft, vehicles and equipment will be on display on Saturday, 25 June and there will also be a parade on Plymouth Hoe to mark the occasion.

According to the Royal Navy, the Merlin Mk 2 is the latest version of the world's most potent submarine-hunting helicopter.

Its primary role is to supply the UK's Maritime Force Protection and airborne anti-submarine warfare capability for the foreseeable future.

Scarborough was one of the first places in the UK to start showing organised communal support to the military, so the North Yorkshire town is a fitting national host for Armed Forces Day 2022.

Forces News will be broadcasting Armed Forces Day 2022 live on Forces News YouTube channel, and Forces News on Facebook.
