A charity is using fishing to help veterans cope with isolation and mental illness.

Cast North West holds regular angling sessions for former military personnel at the UK’s only indoor fishing centre, near Wigan.

The sessions promote physical activity within a relaxing environment and encourages the veterans to socialise with like-minded people and get the support they need.

Friends and family are also made welcome at the sessions, which are supported by money given to Wigan Council by the Armed Forces Covenant Fund.

Councillor Jenny Bullen, lead member for armed forces in Wigan, said: “Wigan Council received over £300k from the Ministry of Defence to go towards services providing support for the armed forces community.

“CAST NW have utilised some of this funding to create an event bringing together the armed forces community, providing support and networking opportunities.

“It’s a great example of how we can signpost people to specialised help whilst also building and maintaining relationships, and is an initiative we are developing in Wigan Borough with the ‘4 Our Forces’ hub, which we hope to open in 2018.”
